One of the most memorable hits from the disco era, "Car Wash" is a song by American R&B group Rose Royce, included in the soundtrack for the 1976 comedy film of the same name, which also served as the band's studio debut. The song was composed by former Motown producer Norman Whitfield, who first wrote it on a paper bag from a fried chicken eatery. He then offered it to Rose Royce, a disco and funk band he had recently signed to his own label. The song was a smashing success and the biggest hit in Rose Royce's career, reaching the top of both the US Hot Soul Singles chart and the Billboard Hot 100. Largely thanks to the popularity of the track, the Car Wash soundtrack won a Grammy for Best Score Soundtrack Album in 1977. A collection of remixes titled Car Wash '98 featuring Rose Royce's lead singer Gwen Dickey appeared in 1998 and peaked at Number 18 on the UK Singles Chart. It was also covered by Christina Aguilera and Missy Elliott for the soundtrack of the 2004 DreamWorks animated film Shark Tale.
