Few bars of music evoke the spirit of Christmas as immediately as the opening lines of “Silent Night.” A Christmas carol for the ages, first composed by Franz Xaver Gruber in 1818 with lyrics by Joseph Mohr. A quieter, more contemplative ballad than other much jaunter Christmas carols, “Silent Night” has become one of the definitive songs of Christmastime and has been performed by thousands of artists over the years. It takes a special version to really stand out from the crowd. American singer Kelly Clarkson knew she had to do something different to make her version, which she was recording as part of her 2013 Christmas album Wrapped in Red, stand out. And indeed she was able to inject new life into the traditional melody by turning it into a collaboration with legendary singers Reba McEntire and Trisha Yearwood, ending in a showstopping acapella harmony. Wrapped in Red was produced by Greg Kurstin, and peaked at Number 3 on the Billboard 200 album chart.
