One of the most important and acclaimed rock albums of all time, Pink Floyd’s 1979 masterpiece The Wall is a sprawling collection of progressive rock songs connected through a metaphorical narrative. And Mother is one of the most important building blocks that make up the album as a whole; The Wall tells the story of Pink, an alienated rock star who comes to grips with his fame and various aspects of his upbringing. In Mother,” we learn that his relationship with his overbearing mother was a contributing aspect of his desire to build a protective “wall” around him, shielding him from the outside world but also leaving him utterly alone. Musically, the song is a progressive rock ballad with an unsettling tone throughout, which the band turned to in order to accompany the dark lyrics. Mother was written by Roger Waters and, like the rest of the album, was produced by Waters along with Bob Ezrin, David Gilmour, and James Guthrie.
