Paul McCartney recorded this welcome addition to the festive music vault as the world marched into a brand new decade: the 1980s. Nearly 45 years later and "Wonderful Christmastime" remains a Yuletide staple, as ubiqutious at Christmas as family bust-ups, overreating and present-giving. The track emerged following the revival of Paul McCartney's solo career in 1980 and was included on his second solo album McCartney II, released in November 1979 following Wings' (who appear in the promotional video for "Wonderful Christmastime") final album Back to the Egg. One of the first things that strikes you about "Wonderful Christmastime" is its distinctive and era-defining synth sound, allegedly crafted with the same make of synth championed by the late Vangelis: a Yamaha CS-80 (although the Prophet-5 appears in the video). Commercially, the single reached number six in the UK and decades later peaked at number 28 in the US.
