In many ways, the blue-eyed soul stylings of Paul Davis' "'65 Love Affair" represented a sea change in his career, which had been characterized by mostly country-oriented material and ballads. Released as the second single from his seventh and final studio album Cool Night in February 1982, the song was originally titled "'55 Love Affair," but the Arista executives convinced him to change its name to appeal to a younger audience. Written by Paul Davis and produced by Ed Seay, "'65 Love Affair" finds the singer looking back on a high school fling with a dash of nostalgia, remembering how simple life seemed as a teenager. Featuring a glossy 1980s pop sound and backing vocals courtesy of the Commodores, the track became Paul Davis' highest-charting single by reaching Number 6 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. Despite this success, Paul Davis would later disown the song, citing it as one of the reasons he stopped performing in the mid-1980s.
