Originally conceived in 1964 by Gino Mescoli and Vito Pallavicini, "Amore scusami" ("Excuse me love") and covered by various artists in the decades that followed – including Rita Pavone, Rosanna Fratello, Giuseppe Di Stefano and Armenian Jazz singer Elvina Makarian – Italian-Austrian baritone Patrizio Buanne offered his soaring take on the bilingual love song in 2005, which was featured on the Russian drama film The Italian, directed by Andrei Kravchuk and inspired by a true story. In spite of its subject-matter ("How to tell you of my heartache? / How to tell you I'm not free? / How can I bear to see your heart break / To see your heart break over me"), this perky slice of classic Italian pop sounds uplifting and heartwarming rather than heartbreaking, adapted into English and immortalized by artists including Peggy Lee, Lovelace Watkins and The Ray Charles Singers.
