Country-rock bright spark Parker McCollum may have leaped onto the Nashville scene in 2019 with a major-label deal but he had been putting in the groundwork as a gigging musician in his hometown of Austin for years prior to his breakthrough. Mashing elements of rock, folk and into his dynamic country gumbo, the harmonica and guitar-playing singer-songwriter donned his baseball cap and put his fresh spin on trad sounds with Gold Chain Country; his 2021 alt rock-flecked album for MCA Nashville, which was produced by Jon Randall. Co-written by fellow Texan Miranda Lambert, sad heartbreaker "Falling Apart" – with its self-deprecating confessions like "Maybe you are better with someone else / Maybe I just saved you from myself / When I left you in the dark / Girl, I knew you’d never call my bluff / The writing on the wall just wasn't enough / You were falling in love and I was falling apart" – takes an '80s-dipped turn in the middle of the album and opens the doors to the real Parker McCollum.
