"Don't Let It Bring You Down," the seventh track on Neil Young's 1970 Grammy Hall of Fame-approved album After the Gold Rush, seems to sit halfway between sarcasm and despair – with a good dose of ambiguity thrown in for good measure. "Old man lying by the side of the road / With the lorries rolling by," sings Neil Young, opening the rootsy folk song with a stark image that has intensified by the end of the first verse: "Dead man lying by the side of the road / With the daylight in his eyes." With its description of 'burning castles', the chorus remains open to interpretation. Also featured on the 1971 Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young live album 4 Way Street, "Don't Let It Bring You Down" has been covered by Sting, Victoria Williams, and Annie Lennox, with the latter's version making an appearance in 1999 film American Beauty. Guns N' Roses also performed the track during their Appetite for Democracy residency in Vegas.
