For their second studio album, Mötley Crüe covered "Helter Skelter" by the Beatles. The packaging for Shout at the Devil contained a giant pentagram on the cover. During the recording of the album, bassist Nikki Sixx was obsessed with the occult and satanic imagery. Sixx was involved in an accident after stealing a friend's Porsche while drunk. He was prescribed pain medication for a shoulder injury and became addicted, which turned into a decade-long heroin addiction. As one of the Beatles heaviest songs, combined with being the song that Charles Manson cited as his inspiration, "Helter Skelter" fit right in with the dark themed album. Their version is classic Crue, filled with thundering guitar and vocal screams, leaving many fans to asume it was one of their originals. In July of 2021, Sixx reached 20 years of sobriety. He spends a lot of time helping other people find their way. He has also found a higher power.
The backing track for "Helter Skelter" is available as an instrumental on Karaoke Version.
