Unlocking the magic of pedal steel guitar with its silvery melody, country ballad "Joanne" depicts a lush scene of love in the countryside. Or so that's how it begins, anyway. "Her name was Joanne / And she lived in a meadow by a pond / And she touched me for a moment / With a look that spoke to me of her sweet love," sings former Monkee Michael Nesmith – aided by his backing group The First National Band – on his sole hit as a solo artist. As one-hit wonders go, he didn't fare too badly; "Joanne" is the biggest solo chart hit for any member of The Monkees, giving Michael Nesmith a Number one in New Zealand, as well as a Number 21 position on the US Billboard Top 100 in 1970. "Joanne" also made waves in Canada, going to Number 4, and hitting Number 3 in Australia. The track was featured on his first-ever solo album, Magnetic South, which was released by RCA Records in 1970 and earned the '60s pop VIP a whole new fanbase of country-rockfans.
