While the Beach Boy's preferred those "California Girls" and LL Cool J rapped about loving his local NY women in "Around the Way Girl," Frankie Beverly sang about the women from the southern states in Maze's hit "Southern Girl." The song is a musical love letter to women of the south. "Below the Mason Dixon line / down there where the girls are fine." The song features a catchy synth melody played by Phillip Woo. The talented keyboardist was a child protegee from Seatle who started playing with funk bands while in high school. One of his early bands included a teenaged Kenny G. Before joining Maze, Woo worked as a session musician and recorded with Grover Washington Jr., Whitney Houston, Jeffrey Osborne, and Patti Labelle. "Southern Girl" is from Maze's fourth album Joy and Pain.

Timeless groove. It's that baseline...tight! Vocals...pretty good. Love me, some Frankie Beverly and MAZE. Thank you, Karaoke Version. 8.05.2021
