American soul band Maze (sometimes also known as Frankie Beverly & Maze or Maze Featuring Frankie Beverly) took it upon themselves to carry forward the soul music tradition in the 1980s. Fronted by singer and songwriter Frankie Beverly, the group steadily built a reputation for themselves with a string of increasingly well-performing albums, such as Golden Time of Day (1978), Inspiration (1979), and Joy and Pain (1980). In 1981, the group released the single “Running Away,” an upbeat soul song with lyrics about leaving a bad situation and looking for alternative solutions to a problem before ultimately running away. Aside from its release as a single, “Running Away” was also included as part of the band’s live release Live in New Orleans (1981). The song was written by Maze frontman Frankie Beverly, who also served as producer on the track. “Running Away” peaked at Number 7 on the US Billboard R&B chart.
