The first hit by American singer Lizzo, “Truth Hurts” is an unabashed opening statement of a song, in which Lizzo announces herself, boldly and gladly, to the world. The song was written by Lizzo, Jesse Saint John, Steven Cheung, and Ricky Reed. It was produced by Ricky Reed and Steven Cheung. “Truth Hurts” combines pop with trap elements, based around a piano loop and Lizzo’s often confrontational lyrics. It is also a great example of a song that didn’t earn much traction when it was first released, only to become a massive hit with time; “Truth Hurts” was first released in September of 2017 and it only started to chart in 2019. After becoming viral on social media and appearing on the Netflix film Someone Great, the song started moving its way up the US Billboard Hot 100 chart, hitting Number 1 in September 2019, two years after its initial release. It was named as one of Billboard’s 100 Songs That Defined the Decade, and included as Number 2 on Rolling Stone magazine’s list of 50 Best Songs of 2019. “Truth Hurts” also earned a Grammy for Best Pop Solo Performance in 2020.
