"Hello" is a song by American singer-songwriter Lionel Richie. It was released on February 13, 1984, as the third single from his sophomore solo album, 1983's Can't Slow Down. Though initially excluded from his studio debut, the song made its way to Lionel Richie's second LP mainly thanks to the insistence of both his wife Brenda and producer James Carmichael. Musically speaking, "Hello" is a ballad that incorporates elements from soft rock and the quiet storm R&B format, with lyrics about longing for someone from afar. Its accompanying music video, directed by Bob Giraldi, encapsulates a poignant narrative of Lionel Richie's unreciprocated affection for a blind student, culminating in a heartwarming revelation of her feelings through a clay sculpture. Shortly after its release, "Hello" secured the Number 1 spot on three Billboard music charts, including the pop chart for two weeks, R&B for three, and Adult Contemporary for an impressive six weeks. Outsde of the US, "Hello" dominated the UK Singles Chart, holding the top position for six consecutive weeks and marking a significant achievement for Motown as its first UK million-seller. However, "Hello" wasn't without controversy. Marjorie Hoffman White alleged Richie plagiarized her 1978 song, leading to legal confrontations. Interestingly, the song's theme, complemented by its music video, has been likened to Adele's "Hello", underscoring the song's timeless appeal and influence.
