Often regarded as one of the finest funk instrumentalists in history, American bass player and singer Larry Graham earned his musical pedigree by performing alongside legendary psychedelic funk band Sly and the Family Stone, inventing the technique known as "slap bass" along the way. He then went on to front his own project, Graham Central Station, with whom he scored a couple of hits in the 70s. During the 80s, Larry Graham moved away from his comfort zone and reinvented himself as an R&B crooner, releasing a handful of albums as a solo artist via Warner Records. Nowhere is this shift in style more evident than on his 1981 album Just Be My Lady and its silky-smooth title track. A slow-paced romantic ballad, "Just Be My Lady" is driven forward by Larry Graham's gravelly, honey-dripping vocals, backed up by lush yet subtle instrumentation. After being released as a single, the song peaked at Number 4 on the US R&B charts.
