"Silent Night," originally "Stille Nacht, heilige Nacht," is an iconic Christmas Carol with a rich history. Penned by Father Joseph Mohr in 1816, the lyrics reflect a post-Napoleonic Wars era in Austria. In 1818, Franz Xaver Gruber, a schoolmaster and organist, composed the melody. The song debuted at the Nikolauskirche in Oberndorf on Christmas Eve 1818. It gained prominence with performances by the Strasser and Rainer families, reaching audiences including monarchs and making its US debut in New York City in 1839. The English version, widely known today, was translated by Episcopal priest John Freeman Young in 1859. Now a public domain piece, "Silent Night" remains a cherished holiday classic and has been covered countless times by artists from all genres, including Elvis Presley, Nat King Cole, Sinéad O'Connor, Enya, and many more. In 2020, American country trio Lady A recorded a lushly orchestrated version for their Christmas album, On This Winter's Night.
