Milan's premier goth troupe Lacuna Coil were formed in 1994 by guitarist and songwriter Marco Coti-Zelati and his friend, vocalist Andrea Ferro, and initially called themselves Sleep of Right. Another name swap from Ethereal to Lacuna Coil and the band set out on achieving their mission of bringing symphonic metal to the fore. The group's debut album In a Reverie arrived in 1999 with the sophomore effort Unleashed Memories following in 2001. However, it was with the release of breakthrough third album Comalies in 2002 and the enduring success of the LP's standout single "Heaven's a Lie" that they began to crystallise their sound and boost their profile. "Heaven's a Lie" served as the band's introduction to the world; a fanfare of explosive guitars and atmospheric two-person vocals that mined their signature dark/light duality, thanks to the joint presence of singers Cristina Scabbia and Andrea Ferro.
