Trusted creator of the anthemic '80s soundtrack, Kenny Loggins had already advanced to god level with his 1984 yacht rock stomper "Footloose," when he returned two years later to work on Top Gun. Capturing the high drama and high-octane, action-packed spirit of the movie, Top Gun produced one of the best-selling soundtrack albums of all time, propelled into the pop chart stratosphere by smash hits like Berlin's power ballad "Take My Breath Away" and Kenny Loggins's own "Danger Zone." The former Nitty Gritty Dirt Band cohort scored a bona fide gay anthem with another of the film's musical cuts, "Playing with the Boys." This brawny synth-laced rocker was used to soundtrack a half-naked beach volleyball game in the film, which no doubt helped to give rise to the song's sexual associations. With the 2022 sequel Top Gun: Maverick in mind, Kenny Loggins re-recorded a new male-female version of "Playing with the Boys" in 2021, featuring Aussie punk rocker Butterfly Boucher.
