Long before the advertising slogan "Maybe she's born with it, maybe it's Maybelline" reared its head, Johnny Rivers tackled a Chuck Berry classic and pulled it off. The New York City-born firebrand recorded his version of the rock 'n' roll game-changer at the height of his powers in 1964 – knocking out a stack of hits in the years that followed, with "Memphis" (another Chuck Berry cover), "Mountain of Love" (a Harold Dorman cover), "The Seventh Son" (a Willie Mabon cover), and "Secret Agent Man" (which reached number three on the Billboard Hot 100 chart in 1966) among them. Johnny Rivers made it to number 12 on that same chart, as well as number nine on RPM magazine's Top 40 Singles chart, with "Maybelline," which was first recorded and released by Chuck Berry and His Combo as "Maybellene" for Chess Records in the spring of 1955. The tune tells the tale of a hot rod race with a driving rhythm that compels you to dance.
