After making a name for himself as both a gifted session player and innovative guitar pioneer, American recording artist Johnny "Guitar" Watson reinvented himself as an eccentric funk showman during the latter half of the 1970s. His flamboyant personality and electrifying stage presence were reflected in his late 70s releases, all of which masterfully fused his early blues influences with eclectic flourishes of funk music. The first album under his brand new persona, 1976's Ain't That a Bitch, was a commercial success in the United States and was certified Gold after selling 500,000 copies. Johnny "Guitar" Watson maintained the course on his following album, 1977's A Real Mother for Ya, falling further down the funk rabbit hole. Written and produced by Johnny "Guitar" Watson, the title track set the mood for the rest of the album with its sleazy funk instrumental track and its extensive use of the talkbox pedal. Shortly after its release, "A Real Mother for Ya" reached Number 41 in the United States, Number 42 in the UK, and peaked at Number 3 in the Netherlands.
