"Johnny Yuma was a rebel / He roamed through the West / Did Johnny Yuma, the rebel / He wandered alone," begins Johnny Cash on this galloping slice of honky tonk-peppered country. Johnny Yuma literally was the rebel; he played the titular character in 1950s ABC-TV television series The Rebel, for which Johnny Cash recorded the theme song. "The Rebel – Johnny Yuma" was written by Richard Markowitz (music) and Andrew J. Fenady (lyrics) and recorded by Johnny Cash. It was released as a single by Columbia Records (with "Forty Shades of Green" on the B-side) and included on the 1963 release Ring of Fire: The Best of Johnny Cash, but actually debuted in 1959 on the four-track EP The – Johnny Yuma. Alongside "Remember the Alamo," "The Ballad of Boot Hill" and "Lorena," "The Rebel – Johnny Yuma" is another example of Johnny Cash turning 19th-century historical reflections into song.
