There’s something about Johnny Cash’s legendarily deep voice that adds a certain gravitas to just about everything he sings. The legendary singer and songwriter capped off a long and storied career with a series of albums for the American Recordings label, containing all manner of cover versions. The second of these albums, titled American II: Unchained (1996), includes a cover of the song “I’ve Been Everywhere” as its closing track. The song was first written in 1959 by Australian country singer Geoff Mack before being popularized by rock and roll singer Lucky Starr in 1962. It would go on to be covered by a wide array of artists, not the least of which was the Man in Black himself. Johnny Cash’s version was produced by Rick Rubin and features backing by Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers. Johnny Cash’s “I’ve Been Everywhere” would also go on to become popular through its use in a series of hotel commercials, as well as its use in film and television. American II: Unchained would go on to peak at Number 26 on the US Billboard Top Country Albums list.
