The country music ballad "Help Me Make It Through the Night" was originally written by American singer-songwriter Kris Kristofferson, who included it in his 1970 studio debut, Kristofferson. With a title inspired by a Frank Sinatra quote during an interview, "Help Me Make It Through the Night" depicts a man craving sexual intimacy, something that proved highly controversial at the time of its release. Later that year, a version by singer Sammi Smith snatched the top spot of the country charts and became her first crossover hit, reaching Number 8 on the US pop singles chart. To this day, Smith's cover of the song remains the most popular version and has since become one of her signature songs. It was also covered by Johnny Cash in 1972 during a live show at Sweden's Österåker Prison, which was featured in the 1973 live album På Österåker. The song also appeared in the compilation June Carter and Johnny Cash: Duets, released in 2006.
