The traditional folk song "God's Gonna Cut You Down" (also known as "God Almighty's Gonna Cut You Down" or "Run On for a Long Time") was first recorded by the American vocal group Golden Gate Quartet in 1946. Very much in line with the religious themes of early spirituals, its lyrics emphasize the fact that no one can escape God's judgment, and all sinners will eventually have to pay for their wrongdoings. It was first released in 1947 by the gospel group the Jubalaires and, since then, it has been covered by several artists from other genres, including Elvis Presley, Odetta, Pow Wow, Moby, Blind Boys of Alabama, and Marilyn Manson. Just a few months before his death in September 2003, The Man in Black himself, Johnny Cash, recorded a version of the song with a different arrangement for the album American V: A Hundred Highways, which was released posthumously in 2006. Johnny Cash's version reached Number 77 on the UK Singles Chart and its parent album became the singer's first US Number 1 record in 37 years.
