Johnny Cash released "City Of New Orleans" in 1973, during a prolific period in which the country singer regularly recorded multiple albums a year. Although the song appeared on the duets record Johnny Cash and His Woman, June Carter Cash's contributions to "City Of New Orleans" are limited to background vocals, allowing Johnny Cash to lead the charge with his big, bold baritone and casually-strummed acoustic guitar. Electric guitar, drums, and upright bass complete the song's rustic arrangement. Originally written by folksinger Steve Goodman and released on his self-titled debut album in 1971, "City Of New Orleans" details the 500-mile train ride from Chicago to the Big Easy via one of America's oldest Class I railroads: the historic Illinois Central line. As interpreted by Johnny Cash, it's a nostalgic song that evokes a bygone era, saluting not only the glory days of the American railroad, but also the splendor of the country's rural landscape.
