"Unchain My Heart," originally written by Bobby Sharp, is a classic rhythm and blues song first recorded by Ray Charles in 1961. However, it was English singer Joe Cocker's version that helped revitalize the track, adding a bit of edge and plenty of coarseness to go around. His rendition, released in 1987 as part of the singer's album of the same name, charted in several countries across the globe and was later featured in an ad for the Australian government. Despite its creation under Bobby Sharp's challenging circumstances and his initial sale of the song for a mere $50, it became a significant hit, featuring lyrics about wanting out from a failed relationship. The song, enriched with the vocal backing of The Raelettes and David "Fathead" Newman's saxophone, reached number 9 on the pop charts and clinched the top spot on the R&B charts. Its impact was profound, even lending its name to Ray Charles' 2004 biopic, Ray. Over the years, "Unchain My Heart" was covered by various artists, including Trini Lopez, The Rivingtons, The Bobs, George Williams, and Hugh Laurie.
