When people think of Jimmy Buffett, they often think of a chilled-out island paradise, but "Boat Drinks" was written in the chilly town of Boston. The year was 1979, and it was a frigid February. Buffett wrote about the song's inspiration in his box set, "Boats, Beaches, Bars & Ballads," explaining that the weather was freezing, and he kept seeing ads for warm-weather getaways. It was so cold that he tells of leaving a bar, and after having no luck hailing a cab, he spotted a running cab, parked with no driver. Inspired by the Navy quote, "Beg forgiveness, not permission," he jumped in and drove the cab to his hotel. He left his fare on the seat.
