"King of Calypso" Harry Belafonte sprinkled a little magic dust over this traditional folk song and conjured a classic. Known under different guises ("Across the Wide Missouri," "Rolling River," "Oh, My Rolling River," "World of Misery"), "Shenandoah" is a sea shanty and traditional folk song, possibly dating to the early 19th century. In 1952, triple Grammy-winning musician and civil rights activist Harry Belafonte put his own stamp on the song. "Oh Shenandoah / I long to see you / Away, you rolling river / Shenandoah, I long to see you / Away, we're bound away / 'cross the wide Missouri," he sings in the first verse, his rich, creamy voice swooning and melting over the bare acoustic arrangement. Many artists have breathed new life into "Shenandoah" over the years, including UK folk luminary Richard Thompson, Glenn Campbell, Bob Dylan, Judy Garland, Pete Seeger and Trampled by Turtles, but Harry Belafonte’s version sparkles like a rare gem.
