Lush, multi-layered production is all the rage in the world of R&B and neo-soul. But there’s also something to be said for simplicity. In the case of American singer H.E.R.’s 2016 single “Focus,” the arrangement consists almost entirely of a synthesized harp, a drum machine, and some vocal layers. The simplicity works beautifully, bringing a certain vulnerability to the song about longing and sorrow. The song was co-written by Gabriella Wilson (H.E.R.), Darhyl Camper Jr., and Justin Love. It was co-produced by H.E.R. and Darhyl Camper Jr., and released as a single in 2016 before being included in H.E.R.’s self-titled debut album the following year. “Focus” hit the US Billboard Hot 100 chart, as well as peaking at Number 1 on the US Adult R&B Songs chart. The song also received nominations for the Soul Train Music Ashford & Simpson Songwriter’s Award at the 2018 Soul Train Music Awards, as well as for the Grammy Award for Best R&B Song at the 61st Annual Grammy Awards.
