Few country artists have explored the cowboy archetype as much as Nashville-based singer-songwriter Garth Brooks. From his heyday in the early 90s with "Rodeo" (1991) and "Whatcha Gonna Do with a Cowboy" (1992) to "Good Ride Cowboy" (2005) and "That Girl Is a Cowboy" (2006), the image of the rugged cattle herder has been a constant source of inspiration for the record-breaking country artist. In 2020, he dusted off his boots and saddle for "That's What Cowboys Do," a George Strait-inspired single written with frequent collaborators Mitch Rossell and John Martin. The song was originally written with country trio Midland in mind, but Garth Brooks decided he liked it too much to give it away. "That's What Cowboys Do" was included in his fourteenth album Fun (2020) and reached Number 33 on Billboard's Hot Country Songs chart. Shortly after its release, Garth Brooks revealed a special live version with a third verse not included in the original.
