UK prog-rock supergroup Emerson, Lake & Palmer – composed of Keith Emerson, Greg Lake and Carl Palmer – get philosophical and melancholic on their 1977 orchestral pop-powered meditation, "C'est La Vie." "C'est la vie / Have your leaves all turned to brown / Will you scatter them around you / C'est la vie," reflects singer Greg Lake on the accordion and 12-string guitar-strewn track. Inspired by Greg Lake's time living in Paris, the song is sculpted loosely like a French ballad and was co-written by Greg Lake along with lyricist Pete Sinfield, his bandmate in King Crimson. "C'est La Vie" was featured on Works Volume 1, the fifth studio album from Emerson, Lake & Palmer which was released as a double album on 17 March 1977 on Atlantic Records, peaked at Number 9 on the UK Albums Chart and Number 12 on the US Billboard 200 and went gold in both countries.
