Rock and roll, long considered the music of lawless rebellion, has always had a deep-seated fascination with the figure of the outlaw, the criminal, and the imprisoned. An early (and very iconic) example of this is “Jailhouse Rock,” the 1957 single by the King of Rock and Roll himself, Elvis Presley. The song actually originated from a movie by the same name, directed by Richard Thorpe and starring Elvis Presley himself. The movie’s theme song was written and produced by the legendary songwriting duo (and frequent Elvis Presley collaborators) Jerry Leiber and Mike Stoller. Lyrically, the song describes a dance party set in jail, and the accompanying dance number from the film became one of the most iconic musical sequences in film history. “Jailhouse Rock” was a tremendous success for Elvis Presley, hitting Number 1 on the US Billboard Hot 100 chart as well as the UK Singles Chart. Rolling Stone magazine placed "Jailhouse Rock" at Number 67 on its list of The 500 Greatest Songs of All Time.
