The blues standard "Baby What You Want Me to Do" was originally written by American electric blues artist Jimmy Reed in 1959. A mid-tempo blues shuffle with a distinct swampy feel, Jimmy Reed's original version entered the Top 10 of the Billboard Hot R&B Singles chart and even enjoyed moderate success on the US pop charts, reaching Number 37 on the Hot 100. In the years that followed its release, "Baby, What You Want Me to Do" was covered by a wide array of artists, including gospel singer Etta James and Elvis Presley, who offered an electrifying live rendition of the blues classic on his NBC '68 Comeback Special. The King of Rock and Roll's version was later included in the television special's soundtrack album Elvis (1968) alongside "Guitar Man," another Jimmy Reed original. Often regarded as the album that revitalized Elvis Presley's career, Elvis reached Number 8 on the Billboard 200 and was certified Gold in 1969. "Baby, What You Want Me to Do" was later covered by English guitarist John Mayall in 1980 and street musician Grandpa Elliott in 2009.
