Ella Fitzgerald added a swinging dollop of jazz and verve to a light orchestra standard on her joy-filled 1960 version of "Sleigh Ride." Following in the grand tradition of Christmas songs written in the heat of summer, which also includes "White Christmas," songwriter Leroy Anderson conjured the idea for "Sleigh Ride" during a July 1946 heatwave and finished the piece in February 1948. The song imagines a winter long ago. "Our cheeks are nice and rosy and comfy, cozy are we / We're snuggled up together like two birds of a feather would be / Let's take that road before us and sing a chorus or two / Come on, it's lovely weather for a sleigh ride together with you," sings Ella Fitzgerald gleefully on her imagining of the song, which was featured on the jazz legend's 1960 LP Ella Wishes You a Swinging Christmas, and popped up decades later in the 2003 hit holiday movie starring Will Ferrell, Elf.
