It was written by lead singer Jeff Lynne who when asked about his inspiration for the title said he just liked the sound of the words. The song's chorus contains a chord progression similar to Pachelbel's Canon in D, except "Wild West Hero" is in the key of G. The lyrics are filled with a daydream of life as a cowboy. “Ride the range all the day till the first fading light / Be with my western girl round the fire, oh, so bright / I'd be the Indians' friend, let them live to be free / Ridin' into the sunset, I wish I could be."
