The Eagles aren't necessarily known for their cracking collection of Christmas musical confection but in 1978 they scored a Number 18 US Billboard Hot 100 hit with slow-burning holiday single "Please Come Home for Christmas," which was originally written by Charles Brown and Gene Redd in 1960 and first recorded by the former in the same year. The sad song surveys the loneliness of the Christmas season while mining a lonesome bluesy sound; "Bells will be ringing this sad, sad news / Oh, what a Christmas to have the blues / My baby's gone, I have no friends / To wish me greetings once again / Choirs will be singing "Silent Night" / Christmas carols by candlelight." "Please Come Home for Christmas" is the first track from the Eagles to feature bassist Timothy B. Schmit after he replaced founding member Randy Meisner, and one of the only festive hits bagged by the band.
