Following the demise of Camper Van Beethoven in 1990, singer and guitarist David Lowery formed Cracker with two high-school friends, guitarist Johnny Hickman and bassist Davey Faragher, and set about honing their quirky songcraft. Cracker arrived in 1992; a catchy collection of roots-dipped indie rock drenched in wit and rooted in lyrical dexterity. Bursting full of sarcastic humour, "Teen Angst (What the World Needs Now)" is the album's chart-topping showpiece; a funny ditty that peaked at number one on the US Modern Rock chart. Written by David Lowery, the tongue-in-cheek track finds him lashing out at the fashion for angst-ridden alt-rock that was in vogue at the time. He offers his thoughts on what the world needed in 1992 (clue: not another folk singer). Following the release of Cracker, the band dropped a hit-studded sophomore album, Kerosene Hat, which spawned alt-rock favourites in "Low," "Get Off This," and "Euro-Trash Girl."
