Released on September 12, 2011, "Paradise" served as the second single from British rock band Coldplay's fifth studio album, Mylo Xyloto. In 2010, the producers of the ITV reality show The X Factor reached out to frontman Chris Martin and asked him to write a song for its seventh series. While Chris Martin originally conceived "Paradise" for this purpose, drummer Will Champion convinced him to finally include it on Mylo Xyloto instead. In line with the album's conceptual arc, the lyrics to "Paradise" address a romantic entanglement between two people who use their imagination as a way to escape the oppressive environment they live in. The song's daydreaming theme is driven home by a plethora of synth strings, rumbling bass sounds, and anthemic chants during its epic chorus. Chart-wise, "Paradise" proved extremely successful for Coldplay, landing at number 1 on the UK Singles Chart and peaking at number 15 on the Billboard Hot 100. Mylo Xyloto, its parent album, topped the Albums Chart in both the UK and the US.
