Even though he began his musical journey in the late 1990s as the lead singer of a thrash metal band, singer-songwriter Cody Jinks has since built a successful career in the outlaw country genre. This might seem like a radical change to the untrained eye, but not for the Texas native, who managed to connect the conceptual dots between two seemingly disparate genres with a mutual love for nonconformity and a largely working-class fan base. After making his debut as a solo artist with the independently released albums Collector's Item (2006) and Cast No Stone (2008), Cody Jinks returned in 2010 with his third LP, Less Wise. The album featured the pensive honky tonk ballad "Somewhere in the Middle," a fairly autobiographical song about accepting one's place in life no matter the circumstances. Along with "Hippies & Cowboys," "Somewhere in the Middle" became one of Cody Jinks' most popular songs and was later included in the album's expanded edition in 2017.
