One of the most instantly recognizable songs in the English-speaking world, the Christian hymn "Amazing Grace" was written by poet and Anglican clergyman John Newton to illustrate a sermon on New Year's Day of 1773. It was first printed in 1779 on the Olney Hymns collection and somehow made its way to the New World, where it became extremely popular with Baptist and Methodist preachers during the early 19th century. Throughout its history, the poem has been associated with more than 20 different melodies, but it was American composer William Walker who set it to the traditional song "New Britain" in 1835, which became the most frequently sung version up to this day. In more recent years, "Amazing Grace" has been covered by several artists from all genres, including Aretha Franklin, Elvis Presley, and Johnny Cash. In 2006, contemporary Christian music singer-songwriter Chris Tomlin recorded a rendition titled "Amazing Grace (My Chains Are Gone)" for his album See the Morning. Tomlin's version was also featured on the soundtrack of the 2007 biographical drama Amazing Grace.
