"Do You Hear What I Hear?" was originally intended as a prayer for peace during the Cuban Missile Crisis. Written in October 1962, with lyrics by Noël Regney and music by Gloria Shayne based on the Nativity of Jesus, Bing Crosby first took the song to the charts in 1962 but it has since sold tens of millions of copies and been revisited by hundreds of genre-spanning artists, including Bob Dylan and Susan Boyle. US star Carrie Underwood conveyed the song's peaceful sentiment ("Said the king to the people everywhere: "Listen to what I say! / Pray for peace, people everywhere! / Listen to what I say! / The Child, the Child, sleeping in the night / He will bring us goodness and light / He will bring us goodness and light") on her country-meets-orchestral pop version of "Do You Hear What I Hear?," which was released as a single in 2008.
