A New Orleans anthem linked to the Mardi Gras Indians parade, "Iko Iko" is a folk favorite that has been passed down and remade numerous times over the decades. Originally conceived as "Jock-A-Mo," the song was written and released in 1953 as a single by James "Sugar Boy" Crawford and his Cane Cutters, while in 1972 the late New Orleans singer and pianist Dr. John scored a low-key hit with his version of "Iko Iko." With its central hook “Iko! Iko! Jock-a-mo Fee No Nay,” and various cries and shouts, the song paints a picture of the ritual when the two Indian tribes come face-to-face during Mardi Gras season. German Eurodance outfit Captain Jack released their version of "Iko Iko" for their fourth studio album, Top Secret, in 2001 and charted in various countries including Germany, Switzerland and Austria. The song has been featured in a raft of movies including Skeleton Key and Rain Man. Don't try and decipher the lyrics though, as you won't get very far – the origins remain shrouded in mystery.
