Stakes were high for American singer-songwriter Brandi Carlile in the years following the release of her 2018 studio effort By the Way, I Forgive You, which won Best Americana Album at the 61st edition of the Annual Grammy Awards and cracked the Top 5 of the Billboard 200. A few months after publishing her autobiography Broken Horses: A Memoir, she returned with "Right on Time," the first single from her seventh full-length, In These Silent Days. Released on July 21, 2021, the track featured production by Shooter Jennings and Dave Cobb and was written with the help of Phil and Tim Hanseroth, who are also members of Brandi Carlile's backing band. A slow-burning, piano-driven ballad about regret and self-improvement, "Right on Time" is a fitting opener for an album that has been described by the artist as "drama mixed with joy." An accompanying video directed by actress Courteney Cox was released shortly after to promote the single.
