In 1978, Boney M. turned their attention to a Rastafarian spiritual—written and recorded by Brent Dowe and Trevor McNaughton of the Jamaican reggae troupe The Melodians—and hit the jackpot, securing the UK's biggest-selling single of that year and remaining at the top of the UK chart for five whole weeks. Lyrically, "Rivers of Babylon" is adapted from the texts of Psalms 19 and 137 in the Hebrew Bible. The Melodians' original roots-reggae iteration was featured on the soundtrack of the film that famously "brought reggae to the world", 1972's The Harder They Come while Boney M.'s version sings from a disco-pop hymn sheet. It was released as a single with another hit, "Brown Girl in the Ring" (based on a well-known Jamaican children's song), on the B-side. Boney M.'s "Rivers of Babylon" was later certified platinum and remains one of the UK's highest-selling singles to this day, also making itself known all over the world.
