Despite enjoying very little success after its release in 1984, Leonard Cohen's "Hallelujah" went on to be one of the most covered songs in history, accumulating a total of 300 versions by numerous renowned artists and several features on films and TV shows. Heavy on biblical references and religious symbols, "Hallelujah" uses Christian imagery as a means to convey a secular story of love and loss. Originally, Leonard Cohen wrote around 80 draft verses for the track, interpolating between the recorded version and a 1988 live performance. The latter was recorded by John Cale in 1991 for a tribute album, which was later popularized by Jeff Buckley on his 1995 debut album Grace. From there on, "Hallelujah" received the cover treatment by Rufus Wainwright, K. D. Lang, Alexandra Burke, Pentatonix, and American rock band Bon Jovi, who performed the song countless times during their live shows. Bon Jovi's heartfelt rendition can be heard on the live DVD Lost Highway: The Concert (2007) and Live at Madison Square Garden (2008).
