“Always,” Bon Jovi’s 1994 power ballad chart-topper, was almost not released at all. The song was first written by frontman Jon Bon Jovi as a contribution to the soundtrack for the 1993 film Romeo Is Bleeding, but he decided against lending the song after being unimpressed by an early screening of the film. The plaintive ballad about absolute devotion sat unreleased until a friend of the band convinced him to release it. “Always” was then re-recorded by the band with help from producer Peter Collins, who rounded out the sound with dramatic strings. It was then released as a promotional single, and one of two new songs featured in the band’s 1994 greatest hits collection Cross Roads. “Always” reached Number 4 on the US Billboard Hot 100 charts and peaked at Number 1 in many countries all over the world, going on to sell over 3 million singles worldwide and becoming one of the band’s signature songs.
