"Symptom of the Universe" is a song by Black Sabbath from their sixth studio album Sabotage. The album title was chosen because the band felt sabotaged by their management who were suing them at the time. Drummer Bill Ward said it was probably the only album ever made with lawyers in the studio. This unsettled environment might not have been what they'd hoped for but it pushed the band to create groundbreaking music. The band, which began in England in 1968, was one of the pioneers of heavy metal music. Music journalist Vladimir Rakhmanin cites "Symptom of the Universe" as one of the earliest examples of thrash metal, a heavy metal sub genre. Thrash metal is known for fast tempos, aggressive shredding guitars, and punk-styled lyrics. The music was written by guitarist Tony Iommi, with lyrics by bassist Geezer Butler.
The backing track for "Symptom of the Universe" is available as an instrumental on Karaoke Version.
