Released in 1983, Billy Joel's ninth studio album An Innocent Man was conceived as a tribute to the singer's favorite music from his teenage years. It mostly featured pop music from the late 1950s and early 1960s, including R&B, doo-wop, and soul music. Four out of the seven promotional singles from the album went to Number 1 on the Adult Contemporary charts, turning it into one of the biggest hits of Billy Joel's career. In addition to the promotional singles, An Innocent Man also included the album opener "Easy Money," which Billy Joel wrote especially for the Rodney Dangerfield film of the same name. According to the author, the music was inspired by the work of Wilson Pickett and James Brown, while the lyrics were written from the point of view of the hopeless gambler Rodney Dangerfield portrayed in the film. Over two decades later, "Easy Money" was featured on the second season of the TV series Lost.
