While singer-songwriter Amanda Bloom was driving, “Magdalena” by Leo Sayer came on the radio. She heard the line “Your love is like a razor” and it struck her that she didn’t agree with the sentiment that love could be a razor. She then started thinking of what she did think love could be. Bloom has described it as a window opening up on the top of her head and the words just falling in. She kept reciting them as she frantically drove home so she wouldn’t forget them. She ran into her house, sat at the piano, and in ten minutes she had written “The Rose”. At a friend’s urging, she submitted the song for an upcoming film about the life of Janis Joplin. Although “The Rose” was rejected by many involved with the film, its star Bette Midler loved the song. It became the title for the film and earned Midler a Grammy and Bloom a Golden Globe.
