"Silent Night, Holy Night," originally "Stille Nacht, heilige Nacht," is a cherished Christmas Carol, written in 1818 in Oberndorf bei Salzburg, Austria. Its lyrics were penned by Father Joseph Mohr, while Franz Xaver Gruber, a schoolmaster and organist, composed its melody. This collaboration came to life for a Christmas Eve mass at Nikolauskirche in Oberndorf, a response to Mohr's 1816 poem inspired by his pastoral experiences post-Napoleonic Wars. John Freeman Young, an Episcopal priest, introduced the most popular English version in 1859, adapting three of Mohr's six verses. The contemporary rendition, a tranquil lullaby differing from Gruber's more moderate, siciliana-rhythmed original, has since become a public domain classic, evoking a serene, reflective atmosphere emblematic of Christmas peace and spirituality. More recently, the song has been recorded by artists like Percy Sledge, Sinéad O'Connor, Mariah Carey, and gospel music duo BeBe & CeCe Winans, who infused the track with a healthy dash of soul in 1988.
